Sometimes strange things happen to me as a teacher. For instance, a student recently walked up to me right before class began.

"Professor, I need to talk to you."
"Does it have to do with the class? If so, let's wait for class to begin so everyone else can hear, too."
"Noo-o-o, it doesn't have to do with class."
"Okay, what is it?"
"Well, my part time job is to work for a zoo . . . and today I have to take care of the baby squirrels. They're here in my purse."

She proceeds to open her purse and show me the two sightless, hairless rodents.

?!!

"I just wanted to let you know in case you hear them making noise during class."

I was at a loss for words. Really, they don't teach how to deal with these situations in grad school.

A couple of weeks ago, we had a big rainstorm here.

It was more rain than we've had in a long time - and that on top of a dry summer.

The Falls was roaring. It looked like some raging brown monster.

It was hard to avoid getting wet - especially if you wanted to get close.

They evacuated Valley Court trailers, because the creek was flooding and they were afraid it'd wash out the bridge. (It didn't, though.)

All in all, it was a lot of fun - and a great introduction to Georgia for those students from places without much rainfall (like Southern California).
